“The older I get the more I value the incredible foundation I got at Bank of America.”
Jeff “JB” Brown
Reflecting on his time with Bank of America, Jeffrey “JB” Brown says he feels blessed to be part of the Bank of America team, and that what he learned at our company guided him throughout his career and continues to do so today. “The older I get the more I value I see in the incredible foundation I got at Bank of America, and I continually go back to it. I learned to stay focused on the work and to always do the right thing. To be a leader at Bank of America, you had to hold yourself to higher standards.”
As he navigated a career with Bank of America that took him from our Management Associate Program (MAP) in Finance in 1998 to corporate treasurer in 2008, JB had a front row seat for the incredible changes the decade brought for the company. “I had the opportunity to be part of some of the most consequential transactions in finance - NationsBank and Bank of America, US Trust, La Salle, Fleet, MBNA, Countrywide and Merrill.”
After leaving the company, JB went on to a successful career at Ally Financial, holding leadership positions and serving as president and CEO of Dealer Financial Services, executive vice president of finance and corporate planning, and corporate treasurer. He led the company’s initial public offering on the NYSE in 2014 and retired after serving as CEO and member of the board of directors for 9 years. In 2024, he joined Hendrick Automotive Group as President, responsible for running the operations for the largest privately held automotive group in the United States – with a large commercial relationship between Hendrick and Bank of America thriving today.
Deeply committed to the Charlotte community where he lives and works, JB serves on the Charlotte Sports Board and is a member of the executive committee. He is currently Vice Chair of the Charlotte Executive Leadership Council and a member of the Executive Leadership Group of North Carolina. In 2021, he was appointed president of the Federal Advisory Council, having served as a representative for the Seventh Federal Reserve District since 2018, and in January 2025, he was named to the board of directors of First Horizon Corporation and chairs the risk committee of the board.
JB joined legacy company NationsBank 3 years out of college, after first spending time working at the headquarters of a clothing retailer whose business practices left him unimpressed. “That experience taught me the importance of culture, because I learned what not to do and saw examples of how bad culture can disrupt an organization.” JB left that company and went to work for his father’s dairy business but knew that he wanted to get back into the corporate world.
As a new management trainee at our company, JB was eager for the opportunities that came with the program, including time spent in San Francisco helping to bring NationsBank and Bank of America together. He returned to Charlotte to take an opportunity in our Corporate Treasury group as a financial analyst, and his career path was set. “I loved everything about the corporate treasury world, and I realized quickly how important it could be. I found it fascinating, and I had a great mentor in Al de Molina.”
In fact, JB credits his mentors and peers at Bank of America for demonstrating what great business and civic leaders can do for their teammates and communities. He especially appreciates the example set by former CEO Hugh McColl and current CEO Brian Moynihan, who he says are role models for how to give back to the community. “I built incredible relationships at Bank of America that are very special to me – and in my current role I know I can rely on the people at the company to help us with whatever we need to get done.”
One of the things JB values most about his time with Bank of America is the depth of commitment the company has to Charlotte, our company headquarters. “I’ve lived in the city since 1998, and my wife and I raised our 3 kids here. Bank of America has always understood the importance of giving back to help everyone in our community grow and thrive.”
JB says that the contributions Bank of America brings to the greater Charlotte area and to North Carolina encompass leadership, investment and the community connections that sports can inspire. “I recognize that Bank of America can do big things,” he said. “What I love about our Charlotte business community – with Bank of America at the top – is that they recognize the importance of civic engagement in the places where we live, work and serve. It’s not just money – you have to give back, and Bank of America has great leaders here.”
The sports environment in Charlotte is a lesson in community connections, and JB’s confidence in how sports can enrich and inspire communities has continued throughout his career, including at Ally. “I look at what we have and what Bank of America has helped build in Charlotte – the stadium, the Panthers – it’s evidence of what sports can do for the economy and the vitality of the community, and I understand the ways that sports can work in bringing everyone together. The foundation for that understanding was built at Bank of America.”
JB remains part of the Bank of America team and a firm believer in our company because of the relationships he’s built and the confidence he has in how the company operates. As a member of the Alumni Network, he takes the opportunity to strengthen his network and continue to touch base with company teammates and leaders. Because he’s invested in what our company brings to the city and people of Charlotte, he appreciates that the Alumni Network is an active resource that can continue to drive engagement and connection across Charlotte, throughout North Carolina - and beyond.
